Thunderbird has been working OK for years but has recently decided to ask for email passwords, then asking again, several times, even if I tell it to remember using pw manager. When pw is given, it Just keeps on asking until I give up. Still receives emails from gmail, but I can't send from Tbird. No problem with gmail itself as I can log in directly and send and receive mail, but then I get a message from gmail on Tbird telling me I just logged in via my browser. All very disappointing.

most common cause defective or over achieving anti virus products.

Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.

If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

The other option is your provider has changed the settings required to connect.
