when will we get a revised 38.5.0 that allows viewing messages?

When I update to 38.5.0 Thunderbird quits working. When I go back to 38.4.0 it works again. Specifically, messages are apparently received in 38.5.0 since numbers appear next to the mail folders, but I can't select any folder. Consequently I can't view any message in the folders or tell anything about the message. The menu buttons don't work, and the Help menu button is missing in 38.5.0. In short, I'm still using 38.4.0 with automatic update turned off, and being urged by a popup to upgrade.

I did restart in safe mode. I didn't have Lightning add-on, but, while I was there checking, I disabled all my add-ons and then updated to 38.5.0. It worked.

All my add-ons were still there, but they were disabled. So, just to see if any one of them was causing trouble, I enabled one and restarted. Thunderbird was still working. Then I enabled another and restarted, and so on until I had re-enabled all of them.

So far, so good. I'm using 38.5.0 with all my add-ons enabled.

Start Thunderbird in safe mode: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode

Then

  • go to Tools (Alt-T) - Add-ons
  • remove the Lightning add-on
  • restart Thunderbird
  • if you need the Lightning add-on, add it back at Tools - Add-ons
