How to change a recorded password in Thunderbird?
The mail account password is recorded in thunderbird, uses it to login to that account on the ISP mail server. I've been pawned by one of the various server hacks and need to change my mail account password. The answers to various questions about change avoid describing how the mail account password recorded in t'bird for that purpose is actually changed.
So, being blunt, changing an account password is a 2-step process - change it on the mail server, and change it to a matching word in t'bird.
I can do the mail server part. How do I change the password in Thunderbird? A step process please - not a referral to my mail supplier.

In theory, you don't need to do this. You should find that Thunderbird offers up the stored password, find it doesn't work and then automatically prompt you for the correct password.

Right-click or double-click the offending item. In recent versions of Thunderbird it will let you edit it. Note that there will be at least two entries, one for incoming, and another for outgoing. Use the search/filter at the top to locate them all.
If you're using an older version of Thunderbird that doesn't offer this in-place editing, just delete the entry, restart Thunderbird and wait to be prompted for the missing password.

Hi Zenos,
Thanks for that.
The hardest part was actually changing the ISP mail account password. Took days to get thru to the ISP tech people who do that: they thought I was reporting an error when I had simply given them a reason for wanting to change. Several exchanges to sort that out. Errk.
But once that was done (T'bird open in the account inbox whilst it was happening) I was about to do the tools thing (your 1st post) when T'bird v45.4.0 blanked the account inbox display and did the password failed, choose new one message you mentioned in your 2nd post.
You should publish a sticky FAQ on the support site for t'bird users on this, along the following lines: 1. contact your mail provider and change the password on the required account. 2. then do this (insert your details, expanded for t'bird version).
Thanks,

How do you change a google imap password in thunderbird? I can login to google mail successfully in firefox but thunderbird does not accept the password so it must have the wrong one.
No that is wrong; tried to login to Google and failed. So that is the problem.
