I know I have a Sync account because I have a printout of my Sync Key, but when logging in, it says that my email account is unknown.

That Sync Key was used by Firefox 4.0 up thru Firefox 28.0 versions, and isn't used in anything newer. The old Sync server that needed that Sync Key was shutdown well over a year ago. If you haven't converted your Sync account to the latest version your data is gone. Sync was never intended to be used for long term storage - it's not a "cloud" service.
The new Sync that came with Firefox 29, and is used with the current versions, needs the email address that was used to create the Sync account (now known as a Firefox Account) and the Password that was used the last time a Sync event occurred.
As far as Sync not recognizing the email address, my guess is that you haven't had a usable Sync account for awhile now.

Thanks for the answer. No, I never intended to use it as long-term storage. It was just something I forgot about and thought I'd reactivate it and make it current.
Time for a new account.
