I followed the instructions in the article about transferring Thunderbird to new computer. Copied profile to external drive, and thunderbird works great if external drive plugged in. I want to have the profile on the new computer and have Thunderbird work off of the new profile place so I can keep the external drive unplugged except when I'm saving something to it.

Well, you copy the profile to the computer's internal disk drive. You have already copied it to the portable drive so just use the same procedure to copy it to the internal drive.

If this had been done correctly, your Thunderbird would be using the new profile, and I am puzzled by what has been done to make Thunderbird look to the portable drive.

The "repair" I would choose is to edit the profiles.ini file to point Thunderbird to the correct location. A more user-friendly approach may be to use the profile manager to do this.
