Until recently, clicking (selecting) a message in the list to show the content in the preview pane, and open the message in a new tab by double click. Now single-clicking a message in the list may show in the preview pane sometime and open in a new tab other time. I checked the mouse setting to make sure that single-click and double-click are distinctively set. So, I am sure this behaviour is because something has been changed in Thunderbird.

In advance, I would like to make sure, opening a message in a new window is not what I want. Opening a message in a new tab or in a new window doesn't make any difference for me. What I want is that single clicking a message (just selecting the message) shows the preview in the preview pane and open the message in a new tab by double-clicking as before.

Nothing has changed in Thunderbird. You are discussing an issue which is down to the mouse and it communicating to computer.

When anyone mentions issues of this type, it has been discovered that it is always the mouse.

Once a single or double click is made, this is a communication between mouse and computer. If computer deems it has received a double click then it invokes that instruction and Thunderbird reponds to instruction.

If you unknowingly make a longer single click, then this might be being perceived as a double click. So check this out as well. Do you use 'ClickLock' ? if yes, try switching it off.
