ics email attachment - (right) click and add to calendar - Why not?

I received an email for an appointment with an ics attachment. Instead of just clicking (right), I had to save it and then go to the calendar tab and import it. Should be simple, why is it so complicated?

You can read about this here and referenced bugs. I saw one post where it was claimed you could drag the ics attachment and drop it onto the Today Pane.
