Firefox Exe using billions of cpus

Every time I open Firefox, since the last update, one of the exe programs begins using billions of cpus and causes my computer to freeze. It is not Malwarebytes or anything else, as I never had this problem before. While Firefox exe programs in general use too much, none has ever gone above 500,000 cpus before. After I mentioned this in a few places, it got better, but it started up again since the last update was posted, even though I have not downloaded it. Perhaps it has something to do with putting out updates? The only cure I have found is to open my Task Manager, and end the process that is gobbling up all the cpus, and after I do that, Firefox runs just fine. Somebody has screwed up with an update and this needs to be fixed, it seems to me. Sometimes, I can't even open my Task Manager. I am using Windows 7, yes, on a PC. And, by the way, this doesn't happen on my laptop, but I have not downloaded any updates on it, and will not.

Start Firefox using Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

I did that, but I don't think it worked. What seems to work is when I send Firefox a message on Facebook and somebody does something that makes it go away. I changed another setting or two, so far, so good. But why would it happen in the first place? Many other little things seem to be malfunctioning, like customizing my toolbar and not seeing any changes, adding extensions that don't appear at all. It's almost enough to make me use Chrome.
