bookmarks on old HDD - cannot use

more options

My situation is: I got a new/used PC with fresh install Win11 and SSD's. On old PC, win7, I used Firefox and saved my bookmarks as "restore" I guess (not HTML) to my D drive. Firefox was installed on old C HDD drive.

I have added old HDD to new PC case and want to copy/move/import my Firefox bookmarks to use in new Edge browser. I found my old saved bookmarks (on D drive HDD) as a JSON file. Edge can import only HTML bookmark files. What do I do?

I've spent 5-6 hours searching web but cannot find any solution.

Solução escolhida

I dont know what "button become enabled" means. There is no change in its appearance whatsoever that I can see. YES color it when it is ready to be use.

In any case, it worked, it makes sense when I open it in browser. Now to get Edge to accept it as an import.

THANKS

Hi d_penny, If you can still access your old PC you can export your bookmarks as an html file.

Export Firefox bookmarks to an HTML file to back up or transfer bookmarks https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/export-firefox-bookmarks-to-backup-or-transfer

Otherwise, you may need to find a json to html converter.

My old PC is gone/gone/gone, BUT I have its HDD installed in my new/used PC. 1) I cannot find any JSON > HTML converter despite what various web sites say. 2) Ive been playing with the JSON backup file in Excel (it is one long 23,000 char string to Excel). 2a) have succeed in getting ~20 valid https:\\ string URIs out of it, but I had many more so I am guessing something is wrong with JSON file, or it isn't a 100% backup. 3) am gonna try getting a SQLITE app and then looking at the "places.sqlite" file on old HDD. (or is it "profiles.sqlite ?)

I found my old saved bookmarks (on D drive HDD) as a JSON file.

If this is a file that Firefox created automatically, normally it would be compressed and the file extension would be .jsonlz4 (LZ4 is the type of compression).

If this is a file you created by using Firefox's bookmark Backup feature, then it's not compressed and you can open it in a tab in Firefox to see what it contains. This isn't going to be pretty, but you can use Find (Ctrl+F) to get a basic idea of whether it has your most frequently used bookmarks.

More importantly, you can Restore that file to your currently running Firefox using the Restore feature. The menu won't list the file, you'll need to use Choose File... at the bottom. This article has the steps:

Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer

Does that work with your .json file?

Oh wait, you want to use the file in Edge instead of Firefox.

Did you already try my converter here: https://www.jeffersonscher.com/ffu/bookbackreader.html

jscher2000: The online converter doesn't do anything. - it accepts my file, no errors - I set, clicked what seem like "output" options

'BUT' there is no "go do it" button. No action(s) taken. No "download" button.

What am I missing?

((the bold button on this entry box is not working either)) Am using Edge browser on Win10.

Am tired of the problems w Firefox and pop-ups. Edge has stopped them from Day 1. Grrr - I really did not want to fall back on MS - oh well......

After the scripts in the page recognize and process the file into the white box, the "Export HTML" button should become enabled. Yours doesn't become enabled? Or maybe I need to color it to make it more noticeable at the end of that line.

It's not clickable until the JSON file is successfully loaded, then the text changes from gray to black. Too subtle, it seems...
