Firefox is not visibly running, but says 'cannot start as already running'. How do I stop it?

Firefox comes up with ' is already running....close and restart', but no visible firefox is running and even in task manager it is not running. How do I 'stop' firefox? Restarting the computer did not help

i have same prob but not just once or twice, regularly-at least once a day- and still does it after restart. it's diving me mad....arghh
