cannot open a pdf
Hi
I am having problems opening a pdf file in Firefox. I have Firefox v4.0.1. When i attempt to open the file it gives a blank page. I can open the file successfully in Internet Explorer 8. I am using Windows XP Professional. I have had problems with Adobe Plugins in Firefox in the past so i use Foxit Reader to open PDFs. I can open the pdf file successfully in Foxit Reader. I have the Foxit Reader Plug-In for Mozilla 1.0.1.1117 enabled.
thanks

At this point I would say get rid of the Foxit Plugin. If it doesn't get removed when you uninstall the Foxit program, set the about:config pref - plugin.expose_full_path - to true, then restart Firefox. Then look at about:plugins and find out where that plugin is hiding and delete it.
Both about: addresses need to be typed in the URL bar / Location bar.
Hi the-edmeister
I'm happy just disabling the Foxit plugin. My pdfs then open correctly within the browser with the Adobe Acrobat/Reader plugin.
I'm just reporting the bug where the "Action" is ignored under Firefox Preferences when 2 reader plugins are enabled.
File a Bug on https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ about this problem. So that it can be fixed in the upcoming Firefox versions.
Hi mha007
do you get the same issue? if not then i wouldn't want to create an account and then report something that is only local to my machine.
No i am not having this problem since i don't need to install Foxit Reader. But maybe some other users are/will be also having this problem.
This website ( https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ ) is monitored by Firefox Developers in order to know about the problems that users are currently facing, so they can develop new Firefox versions as Bug free as possible. So it will be better if the Firefox Developers know about this issue too.

The first link takes me to a site where the forums are closed.
The second link took me to a site where i have now asked for assistance on the bug.
Hey.. I just thought of something. Try this:
-> Close All Applications/Softwares
-> on your system, open a folder that contains a saved PDF file -> select a PDF file -> SHIFT + right-click the PDF file -> in the Context Menu, go to Open With.. -> click Choose Program... -> select Adobe Reader program -> place Checkmark on Always use the selected program to open this kind of file -> click OK
Now open a PDF file and check in which software it opens.
Also, open Firefox -> go to a link that opens a PDF file -> open the PDF link
Check what happens..

Hi mha007
For info, the file association was already set to Adobe Acrobat Reader, and if i open a pdf outside Firefox, it already correctly opens in Adobe Reader.
I followed your instructions and made sure i ticked the "Always use the selected program ...." checkbox. The pdf correctly opened in Adobe Reader (as it already did before)
I then opened Firefox and went to a link that opens a PDF file.
It opened in Foxit Reader in Firefox.
in this case, inquire from:
sorry to be of no help.
Hi mha007
No problem. As already indicated, i have already asked for assistance on that forum and am receiving replies. The discussion is the top thread your link, at the time of writing.
It is now a month since i reported the issue in bugzilla but no-one has even acknowledged the entry never mind attempted to examine or fix it. How do i get a response for this please?
Additionally a forums.mozillazine.org respondent agree with my assessment and say "No argument. But we can't do anything about it. This forum is not run by or formally associated with Mozilla. We're an independent user community"
Just downloaded Firefox 7.0.1 and the problem is fixed, it's opening pdfs in the specified app with both plugins enabled!
Finally this can be closed.
Glad to hear its finally resolved.
