I am getting the following page when I try to access my Google Documents, and also when I try to sign in to my Blogger blog "We've detected a problem with your cookie settings"

I'm asked to check that I have custom settings set up for history, which I do, but still no change. The suggestion is that I clear the cache - but this means I lose every saved password for every site I ever use (which is loads and so that's quite a pain..!)

Is this the only way to try and get back into these Google products or is there another way?

Clearing the browsing cache doesn't remove passwords stored in the Password Manager.

If you clear the cookies from a web server (domain) then yo make Firefox forget data stored in those cookies.
