In trying to open an HTML file on my hard drive, I get an error message, stating "Firefox Plugin Process cannot open files in the 'HTML text' format."
When I attempt to open an HTML file on my hard drive, I get an error message: "The document '[document name.html]' could not be opened. Firefox Plugin Process cannot open files in the 'HTML text' format." This problem is new for me, as Firefox used to open saved HTML files just fine. I'm really confused.

Firefox File > Open.
Use this method to open your HTML file.
That does work, but navigating to each file from within the "Open File" window is less convenient than the program just doing what it always used to. Do you know if there's some way to make it open things by double-clicking on them again?
Check the default browser setting or redo the default browser setting.
Firefox reports that it is my default browser. I changed the default browser to Chrome and then back to Firefox, in case that's what you meant by "redo." Right-clicking and picking Firefox in the Open With menu works, but double-clicking the file or just picking Open in the right-click menu does not.
I don't know why this is. Could it be due to a version update? I've noticed that Google Notifier's "Go to Inbox" no longer opens up Gmail in Firefox either.
