how do i turn off the info banner at the top of each message. It used to have a + or -...I think.

Before the last update I could turn off the currently selected message info banner that lies between the messages list (above it) and the selected message(below it). I recall that it had a + or - box in the corner. The off/on box is no longer visible. The banner is 3 or 4 lines long and takes up screen space.

Sounds like you had the Compact Header add on installed or were using a very old version of Thunderbird. Thunderbird has not had this option since Version 2.
