I've deleted all profiles and then created a new one multiple times, but every time my computer is restarted I get the same error message. I don't want to have to create a new profile every time

Hello ralaven, rename the profiles.ini file to force firefox to create a new profile.

  1. Windows key + R to open the Run box in your win 7, then copy the next bold %APPDATA% paste it in the Run box and click OK
  2. open Mozilla folder and then the Firefox folder
  3. locate the profiles.ini file and rename it to profiles.iniOLD
  4. close all windows

now a new default profile will be created the next time you start the application and a new profiles.ini file will be generated that references the new profile.

thank you

I have no problem with creating a new profile - I know how to create one that works, I've got very quick at it. I just want to stop having to do it every time my computer is switched back on - can someone tell me why Firefox loses its connection with its profile when the computer is switched back on

There is software like Advanced SystemCare with its Surfing Protection feature that can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.
