I want to set-up a notification for birthdays in my address book. How, Please?

The Personal Address Book contact information block has a blank on the Private Tab for entering the contact's birth date. I would like to be able to setup some sort of early notification as a reminder to call or send a card for their birthday. Can Thunderbird send me an email as a reminder? How about a popup message in the systray? Anything to help me remember birthdays.

The Lightning calendar add-on has the option to schedule events and reminders, and other add-ons such as ReminderFox do the same.
