How do I see my read messages. They dissapear after I read them

I reinstalled Thunderbird and I lost all my messages. I thought I'd recovered them from my gmail account but this morning when I turned on my computer all my old messages had disappeared. Also there is no sent folder, I only have inbox and trash. plus the local folders that show trash and outbox. Please help.
