I have tried this artical and many more. After downloading I do not know how to load the updated version?

How old old is that Ubuntu distro?

You may up against Library / Packages compatibility issues for newer versions of Firefox.

My computer is a Dell w/ windows XP home edition w/Intel dual core E4500 2.2 GHz processor, 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM @ 667 MHz, 2 MB cache. I have it set up to start on firefox version 22 but can bypass to start in windows explorer but always use firerfox. it does not auto upgrade?

Hardware looks ok, but WinXP has nothing to do with Ubuntu.

I am more concerned about this - Firefox will not run at all without the following libraries or packages:

   GTK+ 2.18 or higher
   GLib 2.22 or higher
   Pango 1.14 or higher
   X.Org 1.0 or higher (1.7 or higher is recommended)
   libstdc++ 4.3 or higher

An older Ubuntu distro may not new new enough libraries or packages to be compatible with a new version of Firefox. That kept me from installing a newer version of Firefox on my EeePC netbook years ago.

And I haven't used Linux long enough to tell you how to find out the version numbers of those libraries or packages. Might be easier if you could tell us which version of Ubuntu that you are using. With Firefox 22 not installed you could be multiple versions behind the curve.

You posted with a Firefox 22.0 on (Ubuntu) Linux useragent in OP and now you say you have Firefox 22.0 on Windows XP ?

If it is Windows then download frtom www.mozilla.org/firefox/all

Though you will need Windows XP SP3 for Firefox 43.0.2 as it will not run on WinXP SP2.

I received my Dell desk top in 2007 with windows loaded. A few years later a friend gave me the option during boot up to open using Linux Mint 14 Nadia and then firefox as my web browser. Some time has passed. My friend passed away. Firefox remains version 22 and does not auto update. I can download the newest version but then do not know how to open the downloaded file. And i do not know what Ubuntu is or how to find out what libraries or packages I have. Is there hope for me to upgrade firefox?

And later on a friend (now deceased) installed Linux Mint 14 Nadia for him.

If you have been using the Firefox installation that came with Linux Mint 14 Nadia years ago, it would have been getting updated from the Linux Mint repository, not directly from Mozilla. In that case I imagine that the Linux Mint built-Firefox updates would have stopped when (or soon after) a new version of Linux Mint was released.

Note: Many Linux 'flavors' build their own version of Firefox that differs slightly from what Mozilla builds and supplies from the Mozilla website. I can't remember ever seeing even one distro that used the Firefox "build" without customizing it or generating its' own build.

I am a relative 'noob' when it comes to Linux operating systems. I have used a few different 'flavors' over the years on different PC's and on a EeePC Netbook, but never got to the point "where I could take the training wheels off". But I do know that installing a newer version of Firefox, most of the time involves the need to update Linux to the next version or the need to install a newer version. That EeePC Netbook is still using Firefox 2.0.0.19 because I never got around to installing a newer version of Ubuntu (it couldn't handle the new version of Ubuntu) AND I don't use that device on the internet any longer. It is used only on my LAN (local area network) to access my desktop PC, mostly for file sharing and access to my printer.

Sorry if I confused you with talk of "libraries or packages", but that usually determines whether or not a newer version of Firefox will work or can even be installed on a specific version of Linux. And I can't tell you succinctly how to make that determination.

My limited experience with Linux tells me that "there ain't a snowballs chance in hell" that anything close to the latest version of Firefox will work on that old Linux Mint 14 Nadia operating system.
