The older versions of firefox actually allowed the end user to use any website they wanted for search engine results. A user could then type into the address bar - not the search bar - and get results from whatever search engine they wanted.

Today, the end user MUST use the search bar - even though most users only use the address bar. This seems like a false attempt to employ new search engines.

Lastly, the end user is forced to use the selected search engines, which all yield relatively similar results.

Frankly, I love FF, but I'm going to switch to whichever browser allows me to use good gopher. Thank you for listening.

Firefox prevents users from adding custom search engines to the browser to prevent third party software from exploiting this feature. The search providers that can be downloaded onto Firefox have went through an automated validation process to prevent malicious search providers from sneaking through. This has all been done to improve user security.

The people who answer questions here, for the most part, are other Firefox users volunteering their time (like me), not Mozilla employees or Firefox developers.

If you want to leave feedback for Firefox developers, you can go to the Firefox Help menu and select Submit Feedback... or use this link. Your feedback gets collected at http://input.mozilla.org/, where a team of people read it and gather data about the most common issues.
