I am trying to understand how the junk folder works. I have some messages that have a tiny little orange asterisk by the subject and some that don't. As soon as you place the the cursor over the unread email it disappears. I have looked in all the message filters and nothing is set up to do this. I wondered if you might know what it is. It is not a Star its an asterisk !! Kind regards

I don't know of an authoritive definition for the meaning of the orange asterisk, but it appears to indicate a newly arrived message, i.e. one that's arrived since you last accessed the folder. For this to appear in the Junk folder, it would seem that some mechanism is moving the messages automatically into Junk, based on their junk or spam like nature. The automatic junk categorization system seems the obvious reason for this.

When you touch the message, you have acknowledged it and so it no longer needs to be drawn to your attention, and therefore the asterisk is removed.

You should see these asterisks in your Inbox too. They're not specific to the Junk folder.
