not much else to say. it was at the bottom right of the message pane, and now it's gone. Help!! I need to download attachments, and now I can't. I've tried restarting Thunderbird, but it made no difference. I'm now going to change the settings so Thunderbird doesn't upgrade itself any more, because I really can't afford to waste time doing stuff like this, which should be as easy as it's always been. I mean, what's the point of 'upgrading' something, when all you've done is break it? Wasn't this tested? It wasn't broke, so why 'fix' it (i.e. destroy it)?
