As you can see in the picture below, setting the view to All has no effect on displayed messages in the inbox. It continues to ONLY show unread messages. (Just in case image doesn't display properly: http://i.imgur.com/n86rQni.jpg)

Two things:

1) This is not the case for all subfolders. Some of them it works just fine

2) I created a custom view which works just fine on the inbox.

This only started happening a while ago, and I thought it was a thunderbird problem that would be fixed in subsequent updates.. but it has gone on too long now.

Your experiences echo mine with this particular (and optional) control. Like you I too set up a "Custom All" option as a workaround.

Few people seem to use the Mail Views tool, so it doesn't attract much attention.

Well that's disappointing. Have you posted on here about that? Maybe someone else has found a solution?

The customised 'All' was probably created when viewing all, so it should display all. This seems to work correctly.

However, maybe the 'View > 'all' option is showing everything it is allowed because another filter is allowing only all unread.

Please confirm you have the following: via Menu Bar: 'View' > 'Messages' > 'All'

Thanks for the response. Yes, I do have view -> messages -> all. And that is what is selected when I choose View: All from the toolbar's dropdown menu.

What happens if you do this:

via Menu Bar: 'View' > 'Messages' > 'Unread' then via Menu Bar: 'View' > 'Messages' > 'All'

Did this get all emails showing again?

If this gets all the emails listed : Use the button on Mail Toolbar 'View' > 'All' Does it keep displaying all or revert to unread?

please report back on results.

Thanks again for taking the time to work with me. I just did as you said and there was no change. Doing it via the menu bar acts exactly the same as if I'm doing it via the tool bar. :(

I use the View widget on the toolbar and have done with all version in recent years on windows 7 and 10 and it works fine here.

Could it be an add-on? Something you and Zeno have in common perhaps. I know he uses Linux so it is unlikely to be operating system dependent.

Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.

I was hoping that may be the case.. but I just tried it and it still does the same thing
