Clear the cache and remove the cookies from websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Clear the cache":

• Firefox/Options/Preferences -> Advanced -> Network -> Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove the cookies" from websites that cause problems.

• Firefox/Options/Preferences -> Privacy -> "Use custom settings for history" -> Cookies: "Show Cookies"

You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History -> Show All History" or "View -> Sidebar -> History").

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks and history and cookies and passwords and cache and exceptions, so be cautious. If you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of involved files.

If you revisit a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.

Thank you cor-el for your prompt and helpful reply I've done the things you suggested, and I'd like to ask you something further, if I may, please. 1. What should I safely limit my cache allowance to? 2. There are numerous cookies! How do I know which ones are from websites that cause problems? I'm nervous to get rid of the ones I can't afford to lose. Most of them have weird names, and/or just a few odd letters.When I first got the error message I (rashly) deleted all cache and cookies, almost all my life, and had a terrible time trying to get back into most of my favourite places. I didn't know any better. Now I'm so afraid. Many thanks for your advice. Please would you just explain in very easy-to-understand these 2 things. Sorry to be a nuisance but I'm really old - and not so bright. However, I'm extremely keen to learn

The default setting for Firefox Cache is 350megs. That is a optimal size.

Content Blocking would be Ad-blockers or Cookie Blockers which can find though Firefox Menu - Tools - Add-ons - Extensions - then top right corner to search for ad-blockers ie: Ublock Origin, Ghostery or to force the browser to use a secure connection if available HTTPS Everywhere, Fat Free-Fox, ect.

If you go into cookies most sites that you go to are obvious to see. Do not need a lot of cookies that are in there especially with ad sounding names or tracking sounding names. Safe to delete.

NOTE : For other forms of storage you would need clear directions to do any changes of additions or deletions or changing values.

Thank you Pkshadow, that was very easy for me to do. I didn't realise there were so many strange cookies! I was careful and did it one by one, keeping only the ones I recognised. It took forever but worked out well. I still get the error message and I'll keep trying to do the other things you suggested. They aren't so clear to me, but I'll carry on with the battle till I get it right. Am I the only one with this problem? But now. Pkshadow, a new error message is showing up and it upsets me. "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer etc" Oh dear, oh dear, why is all this happening? I Googled it to try and fix it so I wouldn't be a bother but I couldn't work it out. Why me? I try hard to do everything right. I use Malwarebytes but I'm at my wits end. Thank you, thank you, thank you.  It was scary because so many things are going wrong and I just couldn't take a new one!

I did the "delete temp files" thing first, which got rid of everything (I had once before vowed I'd never do again) every single password and user name etc etc. Now I'm in trouble  :( That didn't work anyway. Nor did the "Uninstall Chrome then make IE default" [I used Chrome for Gmail which works fine there but not in Firefox] Another big sigh - of weariness! Then I did the registry bit. and decided that's it. I'll reboot and give up. But when I tried to open something that yesterday gave me the message "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions etc etc. it opened beautifully!!! My grateful thanks for your help and a most successful result. I was so happy. I just wish I could access my Gmail in Firefox without needing to open a New Private Window and logging in every time, and life would be normal. Private Browsing mode disables the disk cache and the cookies that are stored in the Cookie Manager.

Did you try to clear the Google cookies?

If clearing cookies didn't help then It is possible that the cookies.sqlite file in the Firefox profile folder that stores the cookies got corrupted.

• rename/remove cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and if present delete cookies.sqlite-shm and cookies.sqlite-wal in the Firefox profile folder in case cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

cor-el, lots of thanks for your reply. I deleted hundreds of cookies and only kept the ones I wanted. Nothing! Then I went to my Firefox profile and removed all the ones that had sqlite in their name. Every one of the files was from 2013. Hmmm, I wonder if any others are duds. Nothing, again. I could just weep. There has to be something going on. When I used Chrome to get Gmail, I saw all my passwords had been saved. And there, large as life, are my other Gmail accounts, but I couldn't get into them. Also, when I tried to make a new account with one of those user names, I was told that the name is in use, and that I couldn't use it. So it's still there, because I made up that name using Afrikaans, (spelled wrong) and another one with a Zulu word and my birthday. Not too likely to be someone else. I'm just explaining, how they are still there. Is there anything else I could do? Also, why do you think my Firefox profile is 2013 and not July 2017? Only if you have time to spare. I know you're very busy, and my problem is not life-threatening. Just a big nuisance - and an even bigger disappointment. I'm absolutely determined to get a good result one day! Thanks again cor-el. If the files you found are that old then this would suggest that you accessed an older profile.

Did you use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" page to go to the current profile?

Oh cor-el I don't know what to say. For once I'm lost for words! It took me ages to understand the Troubleshooting Information page but I persevered and somehow I managed to get to the profile that said 2017 I deleted all the sqlite files. What did I have to lose? Then I went to my Firefox and nervously clicked on Gmail. Lo and behold no error message just a request for my password. I was shaking. And then there it was. So I tried my other two and there they were also. I closed Firefox and reopened it before I came here to reply to you, just to be sure. cor-el I thank you a million times for your eternal patience and long-suffering - and for your excellent advice.
