how do I open a GPX file attached to an email
I have emails with GPX files attached but can't read files , just get loads of numbers , not the maps.

You need to install an application which can read GPX files and display them as a map. Which application to install is entirely up to you. Google is your friend. This has got nothing to do with Thunderbird.
