Suddenly TB only sends the email of one of my accounts on the second try. Used to work fine, other email accounts still do.

I only have one standard outgoing account/SMTP setting, for my default account, but suddenly I have to first abort sending an email from that account before it will go out. The first time I send an email it takes forever (if I don't abort first) and then I get the message (roughly translated) "couldn't be sent because of timeout, try again". And the email goes out without any problems if I just resend. Following emails are successfully sent on the first try for a while. I didn't ever change any settings, but have checked them anyway, everything seemed ok. Four other accounts at other providers continue to be sent without any problems. I use Win10, Thunderbird portable 60.5.0 (32-Bit) and Avira Free Antivirus 19.2.2364 (Build 19.2.4186.429), but since I have a portable TB I have tried it on other Windows PCs too, same problem, so it's not my system, I reckon. Thanks for your help!

Try it with out the portable part. Load Thunderbird and copy the profile to your hard disk. Still an issue? Thunderbird portable is not Thunderbird, it is Thunderbird in a wrapper that fools it into thinking it is actually loaded onto the local machine. What the wrapper does or how it affects Thunderbird is an issue for the portable apps people, not Thunderbird.

I can think of lots of reasons why this could be an issue. No the least of which is Avira. perhaps it's scan component needs to wake up on send, or it only scan that account because it is the only one that does not use connection encryption. Or it might go to la la land waiting for a password from a password crypt somewhere. if I don't type my password fast enough I get a timeout when I finally get it in there.

Try starting windws 10 in safe mode.

Thanks Wayne, I tried safe mode, but it didn't help. This won't-work-first-try phenomena occurs on different PCs and at different locations (I've got portable Thunderbird on a memory stick). None of my other email addresses in the same app have this problem. Just the one. I checked an old backed up version from last year (when things still worked) and it now shows the same problem.

Thanks Matt - after checking with my email provider too and disabling Avira it seems that was the problem. Although not a real solution, at least I know where to start to find on, I'll try another antivirus programme or learn to live with having to send the email twice. Thanks again for your support!
