Hello,

Something was altered with the Firefox browser. My default page shows a Google Search bar. When I type something in the bar to do a search and hitting enter then brings up https://search.yahoo.com with my search. I didn't intentionally change anything within Firefox and if I go to the "Options" page under my Firefox page, it shows that my default search engine is Google.

How do I fix my searches to use Google and not use Yahoo?

If I use a different browser like Chrome, or Microsoft Edge, they both use Google search correctly.

This problem just started yesterday August 13, 2020.

This is going around, maybe linked to an add-on or some free software install. In order to regain control, start Firefox in its Safe Mode? That will temporarily deactivates extensions which may be interfering with access to the Add-ons page.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.)

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Can you access the Add-ons page in Firefox's Safe Mode?

Also, if you type or paste about:policies in the address bar and press Enter to load the internal About Policies page, does it mention any active policies?

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; (<Control> [Mac=<Command>] <Shift> A)

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Remove “ Yahoo “ Anything.

Also remove SafeSearch, SearchAssist Incognito, FileConverter Addon, SearchLock, DiscreteSearch, WebSearch, Findwide Search Engine, securedsearch

Now do the same in the computer’s Programs Folder.

Windows: Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs. Mac: Open the Applications folder. Linux: Check your user manual.

When I attempt to go into about:addons, it shows nothing. I've tried it, and also tried going under Settings and choosing "Add-ons" and it opens a new tab in Firefox that shows nothing.

Hello, this definitely fixed the problem. Thanks so much :)

"Add-ons" now works in normal mode, and the strange thing that was installed is called "New Custom Tab" its now disabled. I have no idea how that thing was installed.

Anyway, thanks for the advice.
