Periodically, when I check my e-mail, I get the following message:

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: chrome://messenger/content/folderDisplay.js:2674

It used to happen every 3 or 4 days but now it happens several times a day. When I click “Stop Script”, TB crashes. Waiting does not help.

I am using Windows 7. I have removed ALL addons. I have 3 large inboxes. All my e-mail accounts are through AT&T. I exclusively use Firefox as my browser. I do NOT use Google for anything on my computer.

Based on multiple internet searches, many people are having the exact same issue with the exact same script. The problem has obviously been out there for more than a year. It surprises me that I can’t find any definitive solutions.

re:I looked in “Help >>> Troubleshooting Information.” There hasn’t been a crash report since 2018. Am I looking in the right place?

Yes. It shows 'Application Basics, Mail and New Accounts followed by 'Crash Reports' - you may see a clickable link 'All crash reports' to show anything older than a couple of days.

check to see if you the option to send crash reports.

  • Menu app icon > Options > Options > Advanced > 'Data Choices' tab
  • select checkbox: Enable Crash Reporter

re: My Firefox is Version 79.0 (64 bit). This is up to date.

re: Just added “C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird” to my exclusion list. Is that where the profile folder is located?

No. That is just the program. If in default location it is here:

  • C:\Users\<Windows user name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\

It is the same 'Thunderbird' folder you would backup to keep copy of all profile data.

re :Found a folder called “Chrome” inside the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird" folder. I renamed the folder and all its contents by adding “_OLD” to the ends.

Please undo that action immediately. It contains folders that have a load of icons that are called for use by Thunderbird. As I said the error is not being caused by Thunderbird, it is something on the computer causing an issue and the Anti-Virus is a probable cause. Do not ever change anything in the program. It could have catastrophic effects. This time you were lucky. The word 'chrome' has been used for decades by Thunderbird and other various programs. I have a 'chrome' folder in my profile to contain a 'userChrome.css' file which chnages and controls various parts of the Thunderbird UI which I do not like and changed for my benefit. It is not a Google word, they just decided to use it for their browser.

re :I am using the latest free version of Adaware Antivirus (Version 12.8.1241.0). I notice you also said I did the the McAfee deletion about 12 hours ago. That Anti-Virus could have been trying to operate in the background.

The script message has nothing to do with the browser Google has called Google Chrome.

re :When I click “Stop Script”, TB crashes. What version of Thunderbird are you using ?

Help > Troubleshooting information Scroll down to the Crash Reports section Please post the crash Report ID, It is a string of various letter and numbers and will start with bp-

The script is normally a victim of something else in the system that is causing Thunderbird to go slow etc.

What version of Mozilla Firefox browser are you using? Make sure it is up to date. It has been known to cause an issue if it is not up to date.

What Anti-Virus are you using? It may be scanning files and interupting Thunderbird. Suggest you access Anti-Virus and make Thunderbird profile folder exempt from scanning.

My TB is Version 68.11.0 (32 bit). It is set up to automatically update.

I looked in “Help >>> Troubleshooting Information.” There hasn’t been a crash report since 2018. Am I looking in the right place?

I am using the latest free version of Adaware Antivirus (Version 12.8.1241.0). It is set up to automatically update.

My Firefox is Version 79.0 (64 bit). It is set up to automatically update. I always have 4-6 tabs open. It used to not be a problem.

My computer (an HP laptop being used as a desktop) is either on or asleep. It is never turned off. I do restart it occasionally. It may be unrelated but, when I wake the computer up, it sometimes makes a strange ding and goes to the log-in screen. Other times, it wakes up normally. It started doing it about a year ago. I've never found a reason why it does that.

Just added “C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird” to my exclusion list. Is that where the profile folder is located?

Found a folder called “Chrome” inside the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird" folder. I renamed the folder and all its contents by adding “_OLD” to the ends.

I found a McAfee program on my computer (I think it was called “Web Protection”) and deleted it using the Windows 7 deleting process. I cannot find any other McAfee programs.

I did the “Chrome” change and the McAfee deletion about 12 hours ago. I know it’s a very short time but I haven’t had the script error since. However, my TB still can go from slow to very slow to “Not Responding.” The “Not Responding” will eventually go away (usually in 1-5 minutes).
