Yesterday I attempted to change my email password and lost the thread to the extent it locked me out. Today I went into BT to set up a new Password which was successful I then tried to get the email to accept it and finished up going into the Account setup as set out below.

Account setup. Set Up Your Existing Email Address To use your current email address fill in your credentials. Thunderbird will automatically search for a working and recommended server configuration. Thunderbird will automatically search for a working and recommended server configuration. Your full name [Your name, as shown to others] Email address [Your existing email address] Password [Show/hide password] Remember password Available configurations IMAP Keep your folders and emails synchronised on your server Incoming IMAPmail.btinternet.comSSL/TLS Outgoing SMTPmail.btinternet.comSSL/TLS Username b2m13j10v21@btinternet.com POP3 Keep your folders and emails on your computer Your credentials will only be stored locally on your computer.

Against, “Configure manually I clicked on, “Done” and a message came up headed “Error Creating Account.” saying, “Incoming server already exists." I wonder if that suggests that one needs an Outgoing server and if so how does one get one?

Further information. I’m able to receive emails but not send them and recognising BT have massive Outage problems I thought it might be that. However, I checked my Smart Phone and found a number of messages from BT referring to Authentication and re-setting my password, so it looks as though I’ve messed it up and I’m unable to remember how. This message comes up when I have a failed attempt to send an email. “Send Message Error states, “Sending of message failed. Unable to authenticate to Outgoing server (SMTP) mail.btinternet.com. Please check the password and verify the Authentication method in Account Settings Outgoing server (SMTP)

Seriously. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/password-manager-remember-delete-change-tb

You should never, and I do mean never, try and fix anything with an existing account by adding it again. Even if someone from your ISP tells you to. ISP help desks are notorious for not actually providing help.

Occasionally you will be told to create a new profile in Thunderbird and add the account in that to test some issue to fix a problem. But adding accounts again rarely ends well. (usually an error about the account already existing.)
