Unable to add or import gmail-account "Authentication failure"
Hi all, Setting up a new computer and Thunderbird. Did a clean install and trying to add my gmail account. Typed in name, e-mail and password. Retrieve configuration from Mozilla ISP database successfully. Then when i click "Done" I get the google pop-up where I click allow Thunderbird, and the pop-up closes. Then I get a yellow notice in Thunderbird saying "Unable to login at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password."
Username/pass is correct, and configuration is from Mozilla. Tried manually and get a success when i click Re-test button.
Tried a bunch of times over the last few days. Always the same. I have no problems logging in to gmail in using my browser and the same credentials.
I'm at a loss here, thankful for any help.
Cheers!

OK, problem solved. I am not sure what did it, but to get things to work I did the following (in case someone searching come across this thread).
I removed Thunderbird from my google account as a trusted app. I uninstalled thunderbird (I have already tried this many times but this time i also deleted every file left behind that the uninstaller did not remove). Then reinstalled and manually added my account back, re-approved in google. That did the trick.
What a hassle but all good now!

I have search the forums and done everything i could find that seemed to address this problem, including the somewhat outdated mozilla guide. No luck. Cookies are turned on and everything :)
Thunderbird worked on my old computer a few days ago, so I don't think it's anything related to the gmail-account. Let me know if I can provide any other info that would help diagnose this error.
Thanks
Update: I did an export from my old Thunderbird installation and imported it here. Everything went as it should, but the problem persist. When I click to get new e-mails, I get sent to google and need to approve Thunderbird to access my google account. I click Allow, and then i get "Authentication failure while connecting to .." Again, my credentials are correct so that isn't the problem.
Anyone have any ideas on what to do here?
I've tried turning off my firewall, no change.
Gmail tells me I have allowed Thunderbird to do everything, it's connected and was given account access time and time again.
My K-9 Mail program works on my phone without a problem.
Since the account is already established, I suggest clicking settings>privacy&security, then click 'saved passwords' and then 'show passwords' and then highlight both server rows for the account and delete them. That removes any password data for the account. Google should now prompt again for your password. If you had not yet set the account up, my suggestion would have been to omit password during setup.
Thank you for your reply David, alas no luck.
When I check "Saved Passwords" there are no saved logins in the list and the "Show passwords" button is greyed out.
However, Google don't prompt me for a password. When I click "Get messages" it opens up a window where Google asks me to Allow or Deny Thunderbirds access to my Google account. No password prompt.
When I click Allow the window closes and Thunderbird gives me a notification of "Authentication failure". If I then log in to my google account via my browser I can see the timestamp from when I clicked Allow in the log, and Google tells me I have successfully given Thunderbird access to my mail account at that time.
Any ideas?
Thanks you!
