I'm using Firefox 3.16.17 on Windows XP. While browsing my computer has begun to clang with an annoying cymbol like sound very couple of minutes. It sounds like an alert of some kind but I have no idea what. It is very annoying. It usually starts up four or five minutes after I start browsing and then continues until I'm finished.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, after following the steps you recommended, the clanging noise is still there. It seems to happen when a website is addressed or landed upon but not all the time. I appears to be mostly random but I'm quite sure it's a signal of some action taking place.

I noticed that I had set up the alert box plug-in to use a cymbol crash sound: chrome://alertbox/skin/sound/BellSplash.ogg Unchecking the box solved that issue for me.
