Firefox crashes

Hi, i recently had cause to format my hard drive (printer issue) Up until that point i had no issues with firefox( slow) probably my PC. After re-installing Windows (XP)I downloaded and installed Firefox v9. Now when i navigate to a web page windows error report appears saying encoutered a problem and will close. Any help would be most welcome as it is most irritating. As firefox does not produce crash IDs is it a windows (running XP) problem?

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
