I use Windows7. I can find my favourites (bookmarks) using my explorer like this: computer/c:/user/name/favourites.

When I use Firefox I also save bookmarks. How can I find these in my computer???

I want to make a copy of my bookmarks and paste the copy to another computer this way.

Are those only the internal favourites Windows explorer uses for the local disk ?
(I am not using a Windows machine at the moment)

The Firefox Bookmarks are usually used to bookmark websites rather than hard disk locations, although there is nothing to stop you bookmarking hdd files. The bookmarks are then used to navigate to sites with firefox.

You can backup your bookmarks, you may also export them, and that includes the option to export them as HTML files, the sort of file Windows & IE uses for its favourites.

As John99 has noted, Firefox stores your personal data in a separate personal folder inside your user account. The bookmarks + history are stored in the places, sqlite file. You can overwrite this file into the same folder structure on the other PC. This would restore both bookmarks and history.

The bookmarks also have automatic dated backups in the bookmarks folder. which you can overwrite on the second PC and Restore via Bookmarks (Alt + B) > Show All Bookmarks > Import and Backup. This way you get only the bookmarks.

You can also manually export the bookmarks via Bookmarks (Alt + B) > Show All Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Export Bookmarks to HTML and later Import Bookmarks from HTML on the other PC.

Hi, thanks for your replies. My question was really the following:

In IE all favorites can be found on the following location: computer/c:/user/name/favorites

What is the Firefox bookmarks complete location?

As Vivek.Wilfred is trying to explain Firefox uses a different system to IE.

The Firefox bookmarks that are actively in use, are stored in a database, along with other information including the History. The database file is called places.sqlite and that is stored in the users Firefox profile along with other datafiles, including auto backups of bookmarks.

IE and Windows use a simpler bookmark system using .HTML type favourites files,
these are what you see as favorites. Firefox does not use HTML favourites directly, but is able to import and append them to its own bookmarks library, and is able to export a copy of the Firefox bookmarks library as HTML.

If you want to find your firefox bookmarks and the related files thy are in the profile

The quickest method of finding the profile location is

  • Firefox Button -> Help -> troubleshooting information
    Profile Directory [open containing folder]
    • or even quicker go direct to to about:support instead of using the menu
