Get rid of the older Adobe Reader plugin.

Thanks guys. The first thing I did was to disable both adobe acrobat plugins as recommended by the-edmeister. Not good. When I tried to open a pdf (any, including the Mozilla recommended one, it did not come out the open option, just save or cancel. This means that the native pdf viewer is not active or not there. So my question is how do I activate it? If it's native, it should be there. When I search new add-ons, it's not there either. Thanks God I have "pdf it!" But I take the opportunity to ask if pdf it! does not send messages through the internet when I use it. If it does, then it's a bad choice. Please let me know any one that has the capability to check it.

Hello hanksm, check in about:config if for some reason the preference pdfjs.disabled is to TRUE, double -click to make FALSE to see the build-in firefox pdf again.

you have also the option to install it ! it is the next extension : https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/pdfjs/

Did you uninstall the Adobe Acrobat Reader 9 program?
Having both versions installed may confuse Firefox causing unpredictability.

If Reader 9 doesn't appear in Add / Remove Programs, type about:plugins in the URL bar and hit Enter.

Note the Path to that Reader 9 plugin and delete that plugin file. Then restart Firefox.

The native PDF viewer isn't an extension - it is built-in, but newer versions are available as an extension to be installed over the "native" version. Development of PDF,JS is faster than the Firefox release schedule, so a new version always seems to be behind that of the extension.

Basically figure out which you want to use - one installed Adobe Reader plugin or the Firefox version - either the "native" or the newer PDF,JS extension.

HI, guys, thanks for your help, but I will try to be more precise. 1. When I started this thread, I meant that yes I could read pdf's in firefox. I could not print ANY firefox (html) page to my adobe printer. When I command the page to be printed to adobe, I see a small window that shows the pdf being assembled, but it stops in the middle, stays locked, and firefox has to be manually crashed so that I keep working. If, instead of commanding a print to adobe, I use the pdfit! add-on, it creates a pdf in any directory I choose, without problems. But I think I should not depend on the pdfit! because I've always used the firefox until mid 2012 (I can't remember which release) 2. The same thing happens when Firefox is already exhibiting a pdf and I simply command File-Print. I must crash Firefox in order to keep working. 3. When, upon your suggestion, I disabled both adobe add-ons, then when I click a link to open a pdf, I don't get an open choice, just save or cancel. It's a new ball game, besides not solving the original problem. 4. By the way, the preference pdfjs.disabled in about:config is False.

I have nearly identical situation. However, I have found a "painful" work-a-round. I have found (with FF 22.0) That the great majority of URLs that I navigate to via a 'bookmark' will produce the errors that cause one to have to 'manually crash' FF and then have to re-start FF. However, if I am going to a "familiar" website, I can manually type in the FULL URL into the address bar....Viola...the PDF printer function of Adobe X works flawlessly!

Now, can anyone tell me WHY??????

If you have a Windoze system you can do this: Download the free version of CutePDFWriter from <http://www.cutepdf.com/products/cutepdf/writer.asp>. You also need to download the Ghostscript bundle which they label "Converter".

Install the converter, then CutePDF. Be careful, the installer wants to install the Ask toolbar and some other junk. Read the screens carefully!

Once you have completed the install you now have a printer called "CutePDF Writer". Use that one.

Thank you, Unixwolf, the CutePDFWriter is great! It solves the Firefox problem :). Its creator has also released a CutePDFWriter that only uses the cloud. Could that mean that the Writer also sends confidential info to the cloud?

By the way, recently, before I installed the CutePDFWriter, when I was still trying to print to adobe, my windows 7 64-bit popped up an info that "the printer driver for 32-bit is not working". Does that mean the the whole problem with adobe has to do with adobe inside Firefox calling a 32-bit driver for a 64-bit unit? How is it solved? I'm adding that info because many other people have been complaining of the same problem with Firefox and the Firefox technical team should look into it.

I can print to adobe just fine in windows explorer - without a cute anything - but not in firefox or mozilla. Why can't firefox and mozila fix this?

Hi MaryK, The issue is most likely with Acrobat, not Firefox. Cutepdf and Ghostscript "look like" a good, old-fashioned, Postscript printer to Windows. Heaven only knows how the current Adobe beast works, but it doesn't appear to be emulating a Windoze printer correctly.
