Can't install themes in Thunderbird or download xpi file

In Tbird 24.6 in Windows, Created a new profile & restored bare necessities - accounts, email. No extensions. It works fine, but still can't install any themes from AMO, accessing it w/ Tbird. In old profile (using TB to access the addon site) - after problems started, if I tried to install a new lightweight theme, it'd just redirect me to the download page for Personas Plus. It was already installed, but I figured it might be corrupted.

Wasn't aware in TB 24.x, that Personas Plus was still required, to install a Lt.weight theme, but... 1) So I installed Personas Plus in the new profile. Still, if using TB on the AMO themes page, if I try to add a new Lt.weight theme, it redirects to Personas Plus page. No message, no error - just a clean redirect. Again, it's already installed & active (the ONLY addon), in the new profile.

2) If I R click & try to d/l a theme for TB (while using TB to access AMO), it won't show an xpi file - just an *.html file that it's going to d/l.

3) Same in Fx 30 (now) - for the Thunderbird lightweight themes. For some reason, using Fx, I also can't d/l an xpi file for Tbird Lighweight themes. Again - just shows an .html file it's going to save. BUT, Fx still downloads .xpi files for other Fx extensions, just not themes for TB.

Maybe the AMO theme pages for Tbird are messed up (using Tbird)? However, using Fx to browse the Tbird Themes pages, I accidentally clicked "Add," instead of R-click & d/l. Fx immediately loaded that T-bird theme into Fx. That's OK, but still can't get a theme into TB, by any means.

I use NoScript, but every 1st & 3rd party java script is allowed on AMO, except Google analytics & Google.com. Those are the only 2 it shows are requesting to load scripts, besides mozilla.org & mozilla.net (the latter 2 are allowed). 1st party Cookies are allowed.

Maybe someone can try using TB to download a Tbird theme - saving to disk; and try it with Fx. If you do, note anything that's blocked on AMO - like if using NoScript, etc. I've had no problems up till now on AMO, with either Fx or TB. But I've also not installed or downloaded any themes in a while - either TB or Fx.

Chosen solution

Solved (for now). It was something in the profile preventing previewing or installing personas (even a new profile w/ mostly basics imported). Thanks for the help James & Matt. May not have gotten the exact answer, but extra info & ruling things out helps.

A brand new profile - w/o email acct settings or anything imported - handles the personas OK. Maybe one of the few addons I have caused a problem or maybe a (non-addon) file got messed up.

I think ? it may have been Personas Plus that messed things up. I don't use it anymore. But soon-ish after I opened its options recently & played around, functions related to personas became messed up.

I'll just have to carefully reinstall the few addons I use - 1 or 2 at a time, in the new profile.

I can force that by downloading the html and then opening it and clicking install.

so 1. No add-on required. 2. When you hover over the themes in Thunderbird your should see a temp view on them across the top of the screen. (Under featured themes), if not I assume your blocking something that needs to be unblocked.

The lightweight Themes for Thunderbird and Firefox are not really actual Themes but more like toolbar wallpaper.

These are the real Themes. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/complete-themes/ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/complete-themes/

James - Thanks. Yes, I know that. I may not've been clear - but many users know the difference, by now. Full themes have declined drastically - especially for recent Firefox versions. But, I didn't ask about full themes, nor was I trying to install full themes.

Matt - wow. How did you figure out downloading an html document to install a persona? I've never seen a situation where you d/l an html document (the web page), in order to get some program / application to install.

if not I assume your blocking something

Not sure what that'd be. Any ideas? I don't block anything in Tbird (no blocking apps, etc.) & java script is disabled by default in TB.

  • However, I think we're talking about 2 different situations. You may be using Firefox to get (download) Tbird personas?
  • When I use Tbird to visit AMO & R-click on any personas' Add button > "Save Link As," I see: "Add to Thunderbird.htm."

So, I can't install or d/l & install personas, while using Tbird.

In any case, saving an html can't be Mozilla's intended method for installing lightweight themes in Tbird?? Yesterday, I posted a concern on the AMO forum about the personas' Add buttons all linking to Personas Plus addon (instead of installing them in Tbird). No reply yet.

Usually, when trying to d/l something & an html extension appears, it means no actual file is available for d/l. Or, you don't have java script enabled, or other reasons. But not that d/l an html page / document is the normal way to get another executable file.

  • And no, in my case, I no longer see the lightweight themes previewed in Thunderbird when they're hovered w/ the mouse. (They still show previews in Firefox 30).
  • Did you just now try using Thunderbird to access the AMO lightweight themes?
  • Right now, can you "install" personas - in Tbird, by clicking the Add button under a persona? Or does it take you to the Personas Plus addon?

I know how it worked in the past, but it doesn't work that way now (for me) & from what you say, the themes can't be directly downloaded.

  • Can you (currently) see themes previews in TB? What TB version is that?
  • If you see "personas" previews in TB (24.x - 24.6) or can install them in TB - directly off the AMO site, then likely something's still wrong w/ my profile. I'd have to start completely clean, importing nothing except my email acct settings & email.
