Jpeg files on the internet always used to download as jpegs automatically. Recently they have started to download as jpe files. I can, of course, convert them but this is a real pain, especially if I am saving a whole page of images at a time. The first time the problem occurred I solved it by going back to a restore point. It has just happened again following a Firefox update. I followed one suggestion for changing a file extension string from jpe to jpg in the mimeTypes.rdf file, but there was no 'fileExtension="jpe"' to be seen! Thanks for any help on offer.

You can manually set the file extension to jpg when you you save the image or rename existing images with the wrong file extension.

You can check specific file extension keys (e.g. .jpg) in the registry with the registry editor.

  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xxx

You can check the linked MIME type in the MIME Database registry key or search this key for the .jpe file extension.

  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MIME\Database\Content Type\

Many thanks for your response but please understand I am no computer buff. a) if a access these keys and find the jpe file extension, what do I do with it? b) I am sure the problem is with Firefox because IE is downloading as jpg as normal.
