I have gone through all the steps to have firefox delete my history when I close firefox, but when I get to the box that I am supposed to check, it does not highlight the box and won't allow me to check it. This option used to be available to me and I used it successfully, but now it will not. Why?

Just as a first check - is your set-up like this? - Options>Privacy>History Showing "Use Custom settings for History" Uncheck "Remember my browsing and download history" Check "Clear history when Firefox closes". This last box should appear if you've selected "Custom settings". If this box appears and is checked but doesn't work we are back to Square One. I realize you've done this before but there are in fact three boxes to check/uncheck - not one.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode (Always use Private Browsing mode; Never Remember History).

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use Private Browsing mode"
