I tried "reset firefox" which cheerfully promises "your bookmarks will be unaffected" It destroyed all my bookmarks. The search box does not work any more. I tried restoring bookmarks from a recent automatic backup. It says "cannot open that file" I found the "Old Firefox data" folder. When I click on one of the files there, windoze does not know what app to use. When I say "open with Firefox", it just opens a blank tab.

-- Complete uninstall and re-install of firefox -- fixed both the broken search box and the bookmarks (they just magically showed up) . Although, after the fiasco of the "reset", the temptation was strong to have a shorter answer, such as

- - Complete uninstall of firefox - -

whatever.
