Why can't I see the photos sent within an email sent from an Apple phone?

I have been sent an email composed of just photos, but it is empty, except for a minute broken page symbol in the top left corner and a + symbol for magnification which I can't make work.

my guess is the message is malformed.

View menu (alt+V) Select display attachments inline.

Any better?

This didn't work, but I've had the photos sent as attachments instead. Thank you.
