Thunderbird has been working for years in my Windows. I have installed the TB program in F:/sys/Thunderbird, The local mail in F:/Mail and my profile in e:/proj/Thunderbird/profile

After some disk changes today TB hangs. The change was the following. The old E: and F: were the two partitions of a disk. They were renamed as X: and Y: . Then another (and faster M.2) disk was split into two partitions E: and F: and the X: was copied to E: and the Y: to the F:

TB opens correctly. I see all my mail folders but in the upper left corner, and under the File, the round ring keeps rotating.

I deleted all TB program files, reinstalled TB, pointed to my profile, deleted all msf files, run TB in safe mode. But nothing changes the "hang". But I can still access the tool-bar.

If I select the Inbox, then go to Tools/Filters/Run filters on folder, then this option is "grayed"; thus inaccessible.

But it strikes me: no log-on dialogue opens to my POP mail server ( SSl/TLS and "Normal password".

The size of the local mail F:/Mail is 900 files and 8GB.

There has been no other changes than the disk-swap as I see it.

Any suggestion how to track this problem is gratefully acknowledged!

Chosen solution

Only now did I observe that some changes a few days ago in the registry might be the cause of this behaviour. This is so, because other apps have started to behave in a bad manner.

Therefore I have concluded that I must reinstall Windows.

The upshot is, that this thread, unfortunately, is of no other interest to the general user of Thunderbird, except as a lesson that never tamper with the registry. The thread is ended.

Sorry to have bothered you, ChG

re: pointed to my profile, Please offer info on how you did this? Did you use 'Profile Manager' ?

re: e:/proj/Thunderbird/

In that 'Thunderbird' folder there should be a 'profiles.ini' file. Please open the 'profiles.ini' file using a text editor program like Notepad and post image showing contents.

The profiles.ini is an empty file! Something has gone wrong when I copied the files.

So from here, can you please suggest some remedy so that the profiles.ini gets repaired? I include the files in my profile for your reference:

I answered in a hurry. Now I have consulted the link you sent me. When I have read the information it points to, then I shall tell what I get.

In my part of the world it is bed-tinme, so that will be done asap tomorrow!

Very many thanks so far!

I visited the link given above. In the profile-folder the profiles.ini shown below was created by means of the editor. The problem is still there and it is so, even if Thunderbird is run in safe mode.

So, what is my error? What is it that "hangs"? To me, it is as if Thunderbird wants me to fill in the password that my POP3 provider requests, but TB is unable to start that dialogue-window.
