Cannot access websites through URL in the address bar – Android

I have noticed an unusual behavior of late. When I enter the full URL into the address bar and hit "go" Firefox does not open the web address but instead simply reloads the existing page. The only way that I can access a site is to search for it in Google and press the resultant link. Any idea what's going on?
