MSN Send and Receive
Starting on 10/01/2024 Thunderbird no longer allows me to send or receive email.
When I try to read messages using Thunderbird, I get the following:
Sending of password for user XX@msn.com did not succeed. Mail server outlook.office365.com responded: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.
When I try to send messages using Thunderbird, I get the following: Enter your password for XX on smtp.office365.com:
I have tried redoing the password and it does not help.
This is on a WIN/10 system. I updated to the latest version of Thunderbird and it did not help.
I checked out Thunderbird on my WIN/XP and get the same results as with WIN/10.
When I use Firefox and login to https://outlook.live.com/mail/0/, I can send and receive email as before. The same is also true with my Mobile Phone.

um, what version of Thunderbird are you using. That looks to be something from about 10 years ago and it is not going to work with oAuth and Outlook. Only recent versions contain the necessary code to use oauth on Microsoft sites. Hence https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/microsoft-oauth-authentication-and-thunderbird-202
Perhaps try installing the current release version. https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/

Try these: - incoming: outlook.office365.com, port 993, SSL/TLS, Oauth2 (assuming IMAP) - outgoing: smtp.office365.com, port 587, STARTTLS, Oauth2
I was using POP3. I deleted it and attempted to setup IMAP.
When I try to setup IMAP, I get the message: "Incoming server already exists.'
I have not found a way to get around this problem as there appears to be no option to delete the Incoming server.
That can be tricky. Sometimes exiting and restarting Thunderbird works. I suggest setting up account with just name and email address, nothing more
When I enter my name and email address with or without password I get the following message: Configuration could not be verified - is the username or password wrong?
The username and password are correct.
Can I edit data in the Thunderbird directory to add the data?
I do not think that this is related to EDGE, since I do not have EDGE on my WIN/XP, but most times that I use EDGE on WIN/10 then Firefox will not load until I do a reinstall of Firefox.
Please post screenshot of error message. did you finish setup or error during setup?
Error occurred when I clicked the Done button after entering name, email address, and password.

I updated to the latest version and it works. I will continue using POP.
I do not understand why when I updated Thunderbird to hopefully fix my problem, I did not get any indication that the version I was updating was an old version.
How would it know that you're trying to use a feature that did not exist when that version was released? All thunderbird can do is react to what it was designed to do, not what might be an unknown new feature.
Thunderbird send is not working with the 64 bit version of Thunderbird.
I thought that both send and receive were working, but the message I thought was sent from Thunderbird was sent from my Outlook login on Firefox. There is no problem receiving Email.
I have entered and exited Thunderbird and tried the Sent many times and I still get the message
Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.office365.com timed out. Try again.
Configuration is outgoing: smtp.office365.com, port 587, STARTTLS, Oauth2
are you using full email address? Maybe if you post a screenshot of the smtp server pane, it may trigger a suggestion.
What is considered a full email address? I am using: First Last <To@msn.com>
Attached is SMTP Server Screen Shot.
user name must be the full email address, not your real name
I tried: To@msn.com
I tried with only the Email address and it still does not work.
would you mind posting the SMTP setting pane again, just to keep us on same page?
SMTP settings
the user name must be the email address, not your name.
To@msn.com represents my Email Address. Are you saying that I need to repeat my email address as my name and as the email address?
I can only respond to what I see, and your screenshot shows your name, not your email address. The user name must be ajgrambihler@msn.com and nothing else.
This is the response from the attempted send of the Email. It show the Email Addresses.
