For about a week now there has been a problem with the way I see photos displayed on Facebook in Firefox.

Just in case I have tried opening Firefox in safe mode (specifically, with no plug-ins, didn't touch anything else) but that made no difference.

Small photos (galleries, icons, etc.) display normally. The problem is when I go into an album, whether my own or someone else's.

Before the problem started I would get a normal FB page with the enlarged photo embedded in it (not a pop-up). Now photos come up as pop-ups on a black background (oddly, only in Firefox, not in IE) with an X to close in the upper right and a text block on a white background underneath. That's already a nuisance, but the real problem is that the photos in these pop-ups are centred incorrectly, so that the bottom part is cut off by the text portion of the pop-up window.

Just in case I should mention my Windows display mode: 1280 x 960, with large-size DPI. (I can't change that or I won't be able to read text - and, yes, extra-large fonts is already on.)

I've contacted Facebook already, but so far without result. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help with this.

Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems: View > Zoom > Reset (Ctrl+0 (zero); Cmd+0 on Mac)

That doesn't seem to help. I went to the page, then did the reset. Also tried returning to the page after doing the reset (though without restarting Firefox). Neither made any difference.

Thanks for trying! :)

I forgot to mention one bizarre effect.

If I go to a photo page (it's ANY single photo page) where this problem is happening, then close Firefox and save the tabs, when I restart Firefox the page comes up in the normal way. IOW the picture is embedded on the white background, with no pop-up. The way it used to be. Even more strangely, I can then browse forward and backward through the album and it stays that way. (This is the work around I am using at the moment.) But if I leave the album and then re-enter (or enter another album) the problem comes back.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems. See Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins"

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox

Now we're making progress!

With the new profile, I still get the pop-up photos rather than embedded ones - but they are centred properly. :) At least they are if I don't use Zoom or (which I prefer) the Nosquint add-on. Since I have to use one or the other to read text comfortably, this is far from a perfect solution. But at least it's much clearer now where the problem is coming from. :)

Thanks a lot for your help.
