Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

The problem has disappeared. I went into safe mode, problem gone, out of safe mode, problem still gone. I trust it will come back, but who knows

It is possible that some files in the Firefox Profile Folder needed to be rebuild and that starting in safe mode had triggered that.
