Update for Windows Security updates (running vista ) would not allow Firefox or IE to access internet but Thunderbird Ok . Could access internet in Safe mode through both IE and Firefox. and Thunderbird. On driver list Consumer IR device driver had yelow triangle exclamation. After some research removed a series of updates KB 2887069, KB 2893294, KB 2898785, KB 2892075, KB 2893984, KB 2901674. all from 13/12/13. This allowed the system to access internet, updates then reinstalled failed to access internet. So removed only KB 2887069 then system again accessed internet.

Is this now ok or will there be a security problem as update is not in place??

Thank you for raising this question, as we often are the last to know about problems created by Windows updates.

Woody Leonhard, an automatic update skeptic, posted an article on this particular update on Monday: Botched Black Tuesday patch KB 2887069 freezes, fails to configure, triggers a BSoD, and/or zaps sound drivers | Microsoft windows - InfoWorld. As of that time, he did not find any specific, known security problems fixed by that patch. For now, it probably makes sense to "wait and see" whether Microsoft issues an update for that update.

Thanks for the reassurance!

Thanks for reporting the problem with a recent Windows Update preventing access to the Internet unless you reboot in Windows Safe Mode, and the "workaround" which was uninstalling the update.

Since the problem update also affects Internet Explorer, the best place to ask about this would be a Windows forum such as

I'm going to mark this question as off-topic and close the thread since the problem is actually a Windows issue affecting both Firefox and Internet Explorer. Thanks again for reporting it.
