are you sure you have not left open tabs for email that have been deleted (say on your phone) and Thunderbird is showing the only one remaining from a long list.

I do not have a phone - e-mail connection. The problem happens several teems a day and I have to reboot every time to clear it. It does seem to be tied to the "sleep" mode or whatever it is called when I leave the machine for a while and then come back.

When you click on an e-mail you get a tab with the full content of the e-mail. when my windows 7 has been on for a long time it goes to a domant mode. When I have left Thunderbird messages on screen and come back to them after it "sleeps" I try to click out of the tab using the red X at the top right of the tab and instead I get a duplicate of the message that is on screen. So now I have 2 tabs that are the same. Every click on the red X gives me yet another one and I am trying to shut down that message - not make many more of the same. I also get another tab when I click on Inbox. I click out of Thunderbird then shut down the computer and restart and reload Thunderbird and things are okay.

try restarting with add-ons disabled [Help menu (alt+H) > restart with add-ons disabled] and see if the issue continues... It could be an add-on that is the cause

I did remove the add-ons (but not permanently). here is a screen of what I got when I tried to delete the one message from Colleen. I actually had four when I came back from church and I had done nothing to generate them. In this instance I got it down to one message left and when I went to the inbox it started multiplying these messages as shown.

I get an error trying to upload a tiff file on teh add images in the section below of the screen print of what I see.
