How to recover bookmarks from a previous version of Firefox?

Windows 7 Dell laptop with most current version of Mozilla Firefox installed on 5/15/14. All of a sudden all, and I mean every single bookmark from Firefox, is now missing. I searched this support website, and went to the Appdata folder inside the User Folder and the Firefox folder is empty! I've never had this happen before, where the bookmarks disappear from just getting a new version of Firefox! Please help me recover all 5,000+ bookmarks. Thank you!

Did the problem occur immediately on restarting Firefox after the update, or after restarting Windows?

Could you check a couple locations:

(1) If you paste the following into the Start menu search box and press Enter, do you have more than one profile folder? 

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

(2) Do you find an Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop?
