unable to open in another tab
I used to be able to right-click on a link and ask for it to be opened in another tab. That option is on the right-click menu, but nothing happens. I am using Windows XP, Firefox 36.04

Hi kauricat, since your Windows identifies itself as "Windows NT 4.10" (Windows 98) instead of Windows XP, could you check something. Right-click your Firefox program shortcut, choose Properties, then the Compatibility tab. If anything is selected here, deselect it, you don't want Firefox to run without the full capabilities of Windows XP. If you made changes, try exiting Firefox and starting it up again to see whether it makes any difference.

hello, can you try to replicate this behaviour when you launch firefox in safe mode once? if not, maybe an addon is interfering here...
Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems
I have the same problem in safe mode. And when I create a new profile.
I have reinstalled after deleting the Firefox folder.
I have run Malware.
I am at my wits' end.
does holding the ctrl-key while you click a link or middle-clicking it get it to open in a new tabt?
Both of those methods work. Thank you. At least I can get past the problem now.
When I right-click, I get an extremely LONG shortcut menu. Never used to get that many options before.
Does that help explain what's happening?
could you go to the firefox menu ≡ > help ? > troubleshooting information, copy the contents of that page and paste them here into a reply on the forum? this might give us a clue what is going on...

hi, the real information seems to be missing in there - can you try it again while you're running firefox in safemode?

this sounds wrong - can you provide a screenshot of it? maybe that's related to the problem as well...
That doesn't seem to paste into this box.
??
there should be an "add image" button bellow the reply box :))

Safe Mode
Neither Enter nor the Arrow has any effect. Nothing happens at all
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.
See "Creating a profile":
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
- Download the full Firefox installer and save the file to the desktop
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
- Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
- (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
- (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
- It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
I have done both of those things. No improvement.
When I opened Firefox with the new profile, I couldn't do ANYthing.
I will open it that way and send you a Troubleshooting dump
I am in the new profile now and am unable to access ANY websites. Nothing happens when I type in the Search screen that comes up when it opens. I got HERE because this website was in my history.
When I came into Firefox the first time with the new profile, it suggested that I learn how to use Firefox and, eventually, I was able to get to the support forum.
However, I cannot get to ANY other website at all.
Here is the Troubleshooting Info. Doesn't look useful to me.

Looks that the JavaScript that generates the page isn't working.
Do you see any errors in the Browser Console (Firefox/Tools > Web Developer) about the troubleshooting page?
This is what appeared in a popup window when I chose browser console. Nothing much appeared for web console. I will screen capture that one. This stuff is beyond my expertise now.

Thank you Philipp and Cor-el for spending so much time looking into this situation. I am baffled. I guess I will use Chrome in the future.
