I've created a new IMAP profile in Thunderbird and entered the appropriate info for my Yahoo webmail account. When I activate the new profile, will it automatically download and keep all of the emails on my Yahoo email account?

Further, I am wondering: When I tell Thunderbird to "Get" the emails from Yahoo, will it actually download all of the emails themselves, or just make a directory of all of my folders and a listing of each email in that folder, then only actually download them if I click on each one and attempt to read them individually?

From my reading, it appears that Thunderbird in IMAP format, mirrors what is on the Yahoo webmail site, rather than downloading the actual emails. If this is true, I need to know how to actually download my emails from Yahoo webmail into Thunderbird.

it mirrors everything including the emails, but none of it is a backup as if it goes from the server or you close the account it synchronizes to oblivion.

If you want permanent copies your best to export them with the import export tools. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/

Or move then a few at a time to "local folders" in Thunderbird

Thanks! Do I do that in the POP3 profile or IMAP profile?

I installed the add-on. Question: Using the IMAP profile I created, do I download the directory for a particular folder and export all the files in that folder, and, if so, where do I send it to?

What you do or do not do is up to you.

Remembering that only IMAP synchronizes all folders, you will obviously want to be using that. But for your backup, I suggest you periodically export the contents of whatever folders contain important mail. Not much point exporting the spam folder for instance.

But most of all I suggest you use the backup option in the add-on to schedule a full backup of your profile to external media such as a usb dive. That way you will have it should you ever have your hard drive crash.
