What would be needed for Thunderbird to include a seamless connection to calendars and address books on Microsoft Exchange Servers?

Hi Thunderbird Team,

What would be needed to include in the main code base a connection to MS Exchange 365 servers address books and calendars? So far this is only possible with plug-ins (which I and many have been relying on, e.g. https://github.com/ExchangeCalendar), but this has always its challenges and with TB 60 many of these plugins stopped working. However, a Thunderbird without being able to "talk" calendar, address book etc. with MS Exchange servers won't have much of a future, I fear. I'd like to see this feature and if there's anything others and I can do to make this happen (for me this excludes coding, I'm afraid, but includes beta testing, finding support etc.), please let me know.

Thanks for pointing me to TBSync. Have been playing a bit with it since your post, but unfortunately have not been able to make it work yet with our institutional SSO and outlook.office365.com.

Though even if I manage to get TBSync running, it only resolves part of the issue I wanted to raise with my post: without a solid and simple-to-use support of Exchange365 directly integrated into TB, I fear that TB will lose further out to other clients, which I would not be happy about. How do you see this and any suggestions on how to get out-of-the-box support of Exchange365 support into TB?

I'm not really an expert on TB/Exchange integration, and I don't use the TbSync add-on. If you have problems getting it working, I suggest you submit questions to the 'Issues' forum on the github site.

As for why Exchange integration is not built into TB, I think that has to do with the proprietary protocols imposed by Microsoft.

ExchangeCalendar - available on github - provides excellent support as an add-on to Lightning. TB-Sync is another great add-on.

Exquilla EWS is good from what I under but also costs money.
