Every email that I have gotten lately has asked if it is spam or not spam. I must respond one way or the other. This rarely ever happened before. How can I turn this annoying process off?

Spam or Junk. Thunderbird does not use the word Spam. If you really mean spam you need to look elsewhere. Maybe your providers spam filter.
